Essential when selling the property

How FENSA Helps Homeowners

When you replace your windows or doors, you want more than just a good deal. You want the peace of mind that the work has been done properly, safely, and legally. That’s exactly what FENSA gives you. FENSA is a government‑authorised scheme that makes sure your installation meets strict Building Regulations, including energy efficiency, ventilation, structural safety, and fire escape requirements.

Because not all window fitters are registered — and many installations across the UK are carried out without any oversight — homeowners are often left with hidden problems: draughts, heat loss, failed sales, or costly inspections later on. FENSA exists to protect you from that. Every FENSA Approved Installer is regularly assessed, their work independently checked and held to a rigorous standard.

Once the work is completed, FENSA registers your installation with your local council and sends an official certificate — legal proof it was done to the right standard and essential when selling your home. Crucially, FENSA also requires that the installer’s guarantee is backed by insurance, protecting you for the full lifetime of that guarantee (typically provided via an insurance‑backed guarantee/IBG).

In short:
✔ Your installation meets legal Building Regulations
✔ You avoid hidden problems caused by unregistered installers
✔ Your job is independently checked for quality and safety
✔ You get a legally recognised certificate
✔ Insurance backing for the lifetime of the installer’s guarantee

Alternative Schemes

Supporting The Customer or The Installer?

The most direct alternative to FENSA is CERTASS, another scheme used in the industry, but it simply doesn’t offer the same reassurance to homeowners.

CERTASS covers a wide range of general home‑improvement trades, which means it isn’t as specialised in window and door replacement. It also relies more heavily on installers self‑certifying their own work, offering less rigorous oversight of the actual installation.

Because CERTASS is smaller and far less recognised by the public, estate agents and solicitors may be less familiar with its certificates when it comes to selling your home. And while it does offer insurance‑backed guarantees, these are not standardised, they depend on each installer submitting paperwork correctly, which doesn’t always happen.

In short:

  • CERTASS is valid but less specialised

  • Relies more on self‑certification

  • Has lower public recognition

  • And depends heavily on installer compliance

No doubt running our business would be much simpler for us to transition to this this inferior scheme, but it doesn’t align with our values of being customer centric.
